Biography
Rev. William M. Lies, C.S.C., is the Vice President for Mission Engagement and Church Affairs at the University of Notre Dame, a role he began in March of 2012. Most recently, Father Bill was executive director of the Center for Social Concerns (2002-2012). Fr. Bill also teaches in the Department of Political Science and is a fellow of both the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and the Kellogg Institute for International Studies.
A native of Little Falls, Minnesota, Father Bill is one of ten children and has a twin brother , Jim, who is also a Holy Cross priest. He earned his bachelors degree in English with minors in French and Philosophy from Saint Johns University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He received his M.Div. degree from the University of Notre Dame and his doctorate in political science from the University of Pittsburgh. His research and teaching has focused on human rights, religion and politics in Latin America, and the politics of poverty. Father Bill has given talks and lectures throughout the country on community-based learning and research and Catholic social tradition, and serves on a number of related domestic and international boards. He lives on the Notre Dame campus with the Dawgs of Alumni Hall, affectionately known by its residents as the Center of the Universe.
