Are internships paid?

No, all internships through the Department of Political Science are unpaid.

Must internships be done for credit?

Yes, all internships during the Fall and Spring semesters must be done for credit.

How many credits are internships worth?

Fall and Spring semester internships are each worth 3 elective credits. These credits can count towards credits for graduation, but they do not fulfill any major requirements.

How are internships graded?

Internships are graded Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.

Do internship credits apply to overloads?

Yes, credits for Fall & Spring semester internships do apply to overloads. Only juniors and seniors can apply for permission to overload.

Where are the internships located?

All internships during the fall and spring semesters are located in the South Bend/Notre Dame area.

Is a car necessary?

For only a few internships it is better to have a car. Information on public transportation is available at South Bend Transpo.

Do I have to be a Political Science major to do an internship?

Political Science majors are given priority, but all majors are welcome to apply.

How many hours must I work?

All interns are required to work at least six to eight hours per week during the fall and spring semesters.

Can a student do more than one internship?

Yes, you can do up to 2 internships for elective credit towards graduation in the College of Arts & Letters. Many students choose to intern for more than one semester, either at the same agency or at two different ones.

Can I apply for an internship if I am abroad?

Yes, the Director of Internships will assist you in the application process via e-mail.
