Panel: "Predictors of Sustainable Peace"

Although violent conflict remains a persistent reality, much of the world's population resides in zones of relative peace, where societies have acquired effective structures of governance to resolve conflicts without resorting to direct violence.

In this panel, Cortright and Wallensteen will identify and analyze the key predictors of sustainable, quality peace. They will make an argument for robust governance structures prioritizing inclusivity, participation, and accountability. Following a response from Hartzell, the presentation will open up to discuss the implications of these findings for enhancing the study and practice of strategic peacebuilding.

This panel, which is free and open to the public, is the closing event of a 2-day private academic workshop on Governance and Quality Peace. The panel and workshop are co-sponsored by the One Earth Future Foundation.

David Cortright is Director of Policy Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and co-author of a book manuscript, "Governance and Peace," which will be reviewed at the academic workshop.

Peter Wallensteen is the Richard G. Starmann Sr. Professor of Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute and the author of the forthcoming volume Quality Peace, the third volume in the Oxford Studies of Strategic Peacebuilding.

Caroline Hartzell is Professor of Political Science at Gettysburg College.
