Mccarthy Headshot 2019 Opt

Tara McCarthy will deliver the 2019 Hibernian Lecture, “A Century of Suffrage: Catholic Activism, Class Consciousness, and the Contributions of Irish American Women,” on Friday, September 20, 2019, at 4:30 p.m.  in the Morris Inn Ballroom at the University of Notre Dame. McCarthy is associate professor of history at Central Michigan University and author of Respectability and Reform: Irish American Women’s Activism, 1880–1920 (Syracuse University Press, 2018).

In 1978, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians undertook a campaign to establish an endowment at Notre Dame for illuminating Irish-American history. Thanks to this support, the Cushwa Center since then has administered a variety of programs promoting the study of the Irish experience in Ireland and America, including the annual Hibernian Lecture.
