The College of Arts and Letters and the Notre Dame International Security Center (NDISC) will launch a new certificate program in international security studies in fall 2017.
Open to political science majors, the program will offer rigorous training for students interested in exploring career opportunities in international security and foreign policy.
“Along with cutting-edge research and timely public affairs programming in international security affairs, undergraduate education has always been a core mission of the Notre Dame International Security Center,” said Michael Desch, director of NDISC and a professor of political science. “But our new certificate in international security studies takes the undergraduate political science experience to a whole new level in preparing Notre Dame’s best and brightest for careers in this exciting and important field.”
To earn the certificate, students must take the U.S. National Security Policy gateway course and two relevant electives, finish a two-semester senior thesis research project, complete an approved internship in the world of international security policy, and participate in NDISC’s seminar series and other events.

To apply, students must have taken the Introduction to International Relations course, have a GPA of at least 3.72, and submit a 500-word statement of interest.
The program offers an opportunity to gain a broad understanding of international security theory and practice while building leadership and crisis management skills, said Dan Lindley, an associate professor of political science who will oversee undergraduates seeking the certificate.
“Students admitted into the NDISC certificate program get specialized coursework, access to internship funding and mentoring, opportunities to meet our distinguished visiting speakers, and great events — including visits to military bases and our annual small unit leadership exercise with Notre Dame Marine ROTC midshipmen and officers,” he said.
NDISC will hold an information session for interested students on Wednesday, April 12, from 4:30–6 p.m. in the Great Hall of O’Shaughnessy.
