Women in International Security Notre Dame Chapter

The purpose of WIIS ND is to advance women’s leadership in the international peace and security field. We seek to bridge the divides between issues of traditional and human security, between generations of women, and between academics, practitioners, and policymakers. Our goal is to contribute toward building local, national and global communities that empower women in many different countries. We encourage the active civic engagement of women and men who understand the importance of inclusive and diverse participation in peace and security.

A group of graduate students from the Department of Political Science and the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies founded WIIS ND in 2009. Our membership since has expanded to include undergraduate students from a variety of disciplines, as well as students from the Notre Dame Law School Center for Civil and Human Rights. The Notre Dame International Security Program and the Kroc Institute of Peace Studies have sponsoredWIIS ND and have been integral to our success.

WIIS ND is affiliated with Women in International Security (WIIS), a non-profit, non-partisan organization that advocates for women’s inclusion and leadership in the peace and security fields, but does not lobby on specific pieces of legislation. WIIS provides valuable services and resources to build a global network of women in these fields, and increases the number and visibility of women across sectors and around the world.
