Emilia Justyna Powell

Biography

Emilia Justyna Powell is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science, and Concurrent Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame, USA. She has written extensively on international law, territorial and maritime disputes, international dispute resolution, the global order, the Islamic legal tradition, and Islamic constitutionalism. Her forthcoming 2027 Oxford University Press book (with Jarek Nabrzyski), Global Order in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, combines insights from computer science and political science to explore the realities of the global order in the age of modern AI technologies. Powell’s prominent publications include award-winning books published in Oxford University Press, Islamic Law and International Law: Peaceful Resolution of Disputes (2020) and The Peaceful Resolution of Territorial and Maritime Disputes (2023, with Krista E. Wiegand), as well as a Cambridge University Press (2011) book, Domestic Law Goes Global: Legal Traditions and International Courts (with Sara McLaughlin Mitchell). Powell has been a fellow at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, Durham University, and at the University of Copenhagen Law School, icourts Centre for International Courts. Born in Toruń, Poland, Emilia Justyna Powell received education in the University of Nicholas Copernicus (Poland), Jean Monnet Center for European Studies, the University of Cambridge, and the Florida State University.
