Brian Kerg

Biography

Brian Kerg is an active-duty Marine Corps officer. He is pursuing his PhD in political science as a Commandant of the Marine Corps Strategist Fellow. His research interests include alliance formation, coalition warfighting, information warfare, and international security.

He is a prior-enlisted mortarman, communications officer, foreign security forces advisor, operational planner, and strategic planner. He has commanded at the platoon, company, and squadron level, and deployed across the Pacific and to Afghanistan. He recently served as the Director of Plans for III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan.

He holds a Master of Arts in Military History from Norwich University, a Master of Science in Information from the University of Michigan, a Master of Arts in Military Operational Art and Science from Air University, a Master of Science in Strategic Information and Cyberspace Studies from National Defense University, and a Master of Operational Studies from the School of Advanced Warfighting.

He is a non-resident fellow with the Atlantic Council’s Indo-Pacific Security Initiative, a Board Member of the Military Writer’s Guild, and is the managing editor for the Center for International Maritime Security. He formerly served in fellowships with the Pacific Forum, the Irregular Warfare Initiative, the College of William and Mary’s Project for International Peace and Security, the Pacific Forum, Marine Corps University’s Brute Krulak Center for Innovation and Future Warfighting, and as a member of the Editorial Board for U.S. Naval Institute’s Proceedings. He is a frequent contributor to several defense journals.
