Emily Anderson

Biography

Emily E. Anderson is a fifth-year PhD candidate, ABD, in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. She is particularly focused on state politics and political parties. Emily's dissertation focuses on the institutional design and strength of U.S. state-level political party organizations and their corresponding role in subnational democratic health. Prior to graduate school, Emily spent several years working in the Wisconsin State Legislature as a Legislative Assistant.

She is published in outlets including British Journal of Political Science and Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Policy. Her work has also been presented at the Midwest Political Science Association annual conference and the Society for Political Methodology 'PolMeth' conference (2025), among others.

Emily has instructed both in the classroom and online. Most recently, she was instructor of record for a spring course “U.S. State Government and Politics.” She has also taught an online, synchronous summer course at the University of Notre Dame. She has guest lectured on the presidency in "U.S. Congress" and the potential outcomes framework for "Introduction to Quantitative Methods" (graduate course). She also guest lectured on college writing, troubleshooting in R, and various methods topics in her time at Notre Dame.

Prior to her PhD pursuits, Emily spent three years in state government after graduating from University of Wisconsin- La Crosse with Bachelors of Science in Political Science and Biomedical Microbiology. As a methodologist, Emily is looking to bring ideas from her background in bioscience to political science.
