Francisco Carmo Garcia

Biography

Francisco is a first-year Ph.D. political theory student at the University of Notre Dame and a Fulbright grantee. His research interests include early modern political theory, ancient and modern theories of freedom, as well as the conceptions of political judgment, action, and virtue. He is particularly interested in the evolution of the idea of political virtue–of those virtues or qualities related to and manifested in civic life–through ancient and early modern philosophy. Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Francisco worked for the past four years in practical politics and translated Thomas Hobbes’s seminal work Leviathan into Portuguese. He earned a BA from Nova University of Lisbon and a master’s degree from the Catholic University of Portugal, where he was a Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung fellow.
