Madeline Kasper

Biography

Madeline Kasper is a 6th-year PhD Candidate at the University of Notre Dame in International Relations and Political Theory/Constitutional Studies. Her research interests include legal theory, international law, just war theory, security concerns in maritime and territorial disputes, and grand strategy. Before coming to Notre Dame, Madeline received her BA at the University of Colorado Boulder in International Affairs and her MGA at Rice University, writing her capstone on the AUMF, just war theory, and drone warfare. Her dissertation work focuses on ontological security concerns and the change in legal statehood criteria over time within the international order. Her non-dissertation research interests include mercenaries, state-sponsored assassinations, and the works of John Milton, Thucydides, and other epic thinkers.

She has published public-facing articles regarding just war theory and grand strategy, as well as taught her own upper-level seminar on the history of international legal and political thought. She co-instructed two Notre Dame Summer Study Abroad courses in Poland centered on international law and genocide. Madeline Kasper has served as the President, VP, and Social Chair of Notre Dame’s Political Science Graduate Organization (PoGO). She also created and headed the IR Lab for graduate students.
