Makella Brems
Biography
Makella Brems is a PhD Candidate in Political Science at the University of Notre Dame. Her research focuses on the relationship between nature, technology, and freedom in the age of the Anthropocene. In her dissertation, Brems draws upon the civic republican tradition to consider the ways in which pursuing "green growth" may affect our political agency. Brems is currently a Presidential Fellow at Notre Dame. She was formerly the Notre Dame Environmental Humanities Fellow (2024-2025), a Wilsey Fellow with the Notre Dame Institute for Ethics and the Common Good (2023-2024), and a Visiting Scholar at the Rachel Carson Center in Munich (2022-2023). She also holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Notre Dame (2025). Brems has published in The Massachusetts Review (2023), The Notre Dame Review (2024), and The Review of Politics (forthcoming).
