Areas of Interest: history of political thought, political economy, ethics of climate change

Rachel Lentz is a first year PhD student at Notre Dame. Her research interests include modern political thought, liberal democractic theory, political economy, as well as issues surrounding intergenerational justice and climate change ethics. Rachel recently completed a master's degree in political science at Iowa State University, writing her thesis on the unique challenge economic inequality poses to the role of sympathy in Adam Smith's sentimentalist moral theory. This project culminated in a presentation at the Adam Smith Tercentenary Week hosted by the University of Glasgow in June 2023. She has a co-authored article forthcoming in The Review of Politics  which compares Adam Smith with his teacher Francis Hutcheson, highlighing divergences in their paradigms of impartiality for moral deliberation. Rachel is a Deans' Fellow at Notre Dame and was also awarded a Mercatus Center Don Lavoie Fellowship for the 2023-2024 year.
