Congratulations to Juan Albarracin Dierolf, a 2018 Ph.D., whose dissertation was awarded an Honorable Mention for the Best Dissertation in Social Sciences – Melhor Tese em Ciências Sóciais (Sérgio Buarque de Holanda prize) by the Brazil Section of the Latin American Studies Association.

The dissertation, "Criminalized Electoral Politics. The Socio-Political Foundations of Electoral Coercion in Democratic Brazil", "explores the political nature of criminal violence, as well as the institutional and social factors that foster the overlap of criminal violence and elections and thus threaten democratic citizenship in marginalized communities."

Dierolf is currently an Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Political Studies at Universidad Icesi in Cali, Columbia.
